Objectives
Total Hip Create rehabilitation programs for specific hip joint arthroplasty procedures. Analyze the surgical considerations and options avail- able for hip joint arthroplasty. Judge post-operative precautions/restrictions following hip joint arthroplasty. Apply joint specific evaluation tools. Describe the aspects of total joint surgery and the im- pact on rehabilitation. Design multidisciplinary care plans and their impact on patient care. Construct the stages in medical and surgical management for patients receiving a hip joint replacement. Inspect and review the rationale for rehabilitation protocols following hip joint replacement. Implement evidence-based treatment interventions for hip joint replacements. Total Knee Create rehabilitation programs for specific knee joint arthroplasty procedures. Analyze the surgical considerations and options available for knee joint arthroplasty. Judge post-operative precautions/restrictions following knee joint arthroplasty. Apply joint specific evaluation tools. Describe the aspects of total joint surgery and the impact on rehabilitation. Design multidisciplinary care plans and their impact on patient care. Construct the stages in medical and surgical management for patients receiving a knee joint replacement. Inspect and review the rationale for rehabilitation protocols following knee joint replacement. Implement evidence-based treatment interventions for knee joint replacements. Hip Fracture Identify and discuss recent research on hip fracture outcomes, rehabilitation facts and treatment recommendations. Compare and contrast causes and types of hip fractures. Discuss hip fracture surgical techniques and understand the orthopedic surgeon’s view of rehabilitation for hip fractures. Develop and modify evaluations that gather the most pertinent and clinically relevant information for hip fracture management from the acute to chronic care settings. Design cutting edge and clinically relevant treatment programs for hip fracture patients in the acute to chronic care settings. Instruct your patients with hip fracture on home exercises which have been demonstrated in the literature to be beneficial in decreasing pain and improving function.

Agenda

Description
Total Hip Learn the latest on Total Hip Arthroplasty. This course combines the medical, surgical, and rehabilitative expertise of a nationally known, highly trained physical therapist with over 20 years of full-time clinical experience in Vanderbilt’s world-renowned shock trauma and orthopedic joint replacement center. The rich combination of vast clinical expertise and evidence-based practice provides participants with a unique opportunity to see the entire spectrum of care for the patient from prevention through treatment. The course will review the anatomy and biomechanics of lower extremities with discussion of surgical techniques for hip arthroplasty. Critical pathways (i.e., care plans), therapeutic treatment techniques, and rehabilitation protocols will be presented for the total hip surgeries. Pre- operative, acute care, and post-discharge concerns will be addressed and examples of a precise therapeutic exercise program within all clinical settings will be presented. Suggested protocols, sample home exercise instruction sheets, and home exercise programs along with evaluation and treatment guidelines will be given, thus providing therapists with information to improve their clinical practice related to hip joint arthroplasty. Total Knee The emphasis of this seminar is on the medical and rehabilitative management of knee joint arthroplasty. The course combines the medical, surgical, and rehabilitative expertise of a nationally known highly trained physical therapist. This rich combination provides participants with a unique opportunity to see the entire spectrum of care for the patient from prevention through treatment. The course will review the anatomy and biomechanics of lower extremities with discussion of surgical techniques for knee arthroplasty. Critical pathways (i.e., care plans), therapeutic treatment techniques, and rehabilitation protocols will be presented for the total knee surgery. Pre- operative, acute care, and post-discharge concerns will be addressed and examples of a precise therapeutic exercise program within each setting will be presented. Suggested protocols, sample home exercise instruction sheets, and home exercise programs along with evaluation and treatment guidelines will be given, thus providing therapists with information to improve their clinical practice related to knee joint arthroplasty. Hip Fracture This course poses the questions: “Why is hip fracture such a devastating problem?” and “What are we doing well to treat this problem and what can we do better?” Join us as we take you on a journey through the evidence-based literature via interview and patient care scenarios. Through interviews and demonstrations, you will be exposed to the most recent statistics and background information on causes and types of hip fractures and the most up to date evaluations and treatments. Listen to national experts and researchers as they share their perspectives and advice. Follow patient care trajectory from orthopedic surgeon interviews to surgical videos, acute care physical and occupational therapists, and skilled nursing physical and occupational therapists to a therapist practicing in the home. The course is clinically focused, uses real patients to demonstrate quality care at all levels of rehabilitation (acute to part B), and emphasizes what physical and occupational therapists can do to improve outcomes for our patients with hip fractures.
