# 232 Stroke Recovery: A Strength-Based Approach - Options to Maximize Functional Outcomes

Motivations, Inc.

Format(s):   Live Seminars
Discipline(s):   Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy
Contact Hours:   8
Registration Fee:   $225.00

Objectives
Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to: Hypothesize strength impairment and prognosis given stroke lesion and other patient characteristics via review of case studies
Differentiate between strength as force generation versus functional strength and assess each using the appropriate measurement tool
Formulate SMART goals based on outcomes as indicated by the measurement tool
Plan innovative treatment interventions relevant to stroke impairments and patient goals
Justify treatment interventions for reimbursement by practicing documentation, incorporating aspects of G-codes
Articulate and defend choice of measurement tools, goals, treatment interventions and documentation after viewing video case studies

Target Audience
A Workshop for Physical Therapists, Physical Therapists Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants

Description
Past research has purported interventions of constraint, intensity, and repetition as key factors to stroke recovery. Stroke recovery however, is multifactorial that encompasses cognitive, motor, sensory, environmental, psychosocial components and most importantly lesion location and the extent of damage. Lesion location and damage dictates stroke impairment. The key to targeted interventions and subsequent potential for maximal outcomes is to choose the appropriate measurement tool to assess lesion specific stroke deficits. This course will address the neuroanatomical origin of strength and how it is impacted based on lesion site. Clinical case studies will address the upper extremity, trunk and lower extremity. Treatment interventions will be supported by evidence in practice. Therapy practitioners will be given the opportunity to demonstrate clinical decision-making skills used to choose measurement tools to assess strength after observing videos and present examples of goals established, treatment intervention, and documentation examples.
