Objectives

Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the professional on working with patients suffering from Parkinson's Disease.Professional Objectives: At the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to: List the common motor and non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Distinguish between idiopathic PD and atypical parkinsonism. Describe the impact non-motor symptoms have on the functional ability of individuals with Parkinson's disease. List cognitive changes associated with Parkinson's Disease. Summarize medical and surgical treatments impact the functional ability of individuals with Parkinson's disease. List commonly used outcome measures for assessing individuals with PD based on disease stage and clinical presentation. Summarize recent research on neuroplasticity and the of role of high-intensity exercise in individuals with PD. Develop plans of care across the disease continuum. Establish appropriate therapeutic exercise programs using various types of equipment.Design treatment strategies relating to PD-related gait and mobility deficits.Develop treatment strategies to manage mobility issues related to the motor-sensory disconnect of PD.Design fall risk reduction strategies. Criteria for Completion:A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.

Description

For too long, patients with Parkinson's disease were only referred to rehabilitation therapy after they began to lose function or suffered an injury due to a fall. By this time patients were becoming increasingly inactive and fearful, and were rapidly losing their independence. Many of the therapy strategies used were compensatory and not believed to be long-lasting. Fortunately we now know that early intervention is vital in managing PD and preventing functional decline, and that restoring function is possible.This course will provide therapists with extensive education on working with individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD), no matter what stage of the disease they are in. Therapists will learn about the motor and non-motor symptoms of PD and how they affect patients' mobility, cognition, and quality of life. Therapists will also learn how to perform comprehensive, evidence-based evaluations, and how to provide effective, creative, and evidence-based treatments in order to put the "fun" back into their functional ability.This Seminar-On-Demand is 6 contact hours in length (check your state's approval status in the state specific course catalog for your profession).
