Course Goals:
This course is intended to instruct the professional on suicide screening.
Professional Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to:
Identify Suicide as a cause of death in the United States
Recognize the common theories of suicidality
Identify common thinking patterns of suicidal people
List three screening tools
Recognize the warnings signs of associated with suicidal ideation
Identify risk factors that are associated with increased risk of suicide
Cite three resources for referral
Identify the elements of a safety plan
Cite effective ways to help a suicidal person
Criteria for Completion:A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.

Description
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) suicide is ranked as the 10th leading cause of death in the United States with over 40,000 people dying each year. Unfortunately the prevailing stigma and silence that surrounds suicide has prevented people from receiving the proper training and education required to recognize and help a suicidal person.
This course will teach people how to recognize the warning signs of a suicidal person and screen for suicidal risk, utilizing the current tools and methods available. Referral for appropriate services, tips to help the suicidal client, andplanning for safety will also be covered. This basic course is designed to help all providers identify and assist a suicidal client.
