The reported incidence of Congenital Muscular Torticollis (CMT) ranges from 0.3% to 16% making it one of the top three most common congenital musculoskeletal deformities. Longer episodes of care and greater potential for surgical intervention has been associated with severe range of motion deficits, older age at treatment onset, and the presence of a fibrotic mass in the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Early identification and intervention are essential for the best outcomes, early detection of secondary or associated impairments, and prevention of future issues. In 2013, the Section on Pediatrics for the American Physical Therapy Association published a 47 page evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) on the physical therapy management of CMT. Sixteen action statements for screening, examination, intervention, discharge and follow-up were formulated based upon critical appraisal of the literature and expert opinion. This course reviews these action statements, discusses new evidence since the CPG was published, and presents recommendations on integrating the CPG into clinical practice.
