Objectives

Part 1 Evaluation (1 hour 15 min)
A Master Clinician performs an initial evaluation on a patient he has never treated before. Subjective intake questions have been modified for a patient with aphasia. Objective tests and measures for upper extremity, trunk, and lower extremity impairments in a patient with hemiparesis hip fracture and multiple medical problems are demonstrated.
Part II Treatment (1 hour 15 min) Creative evidence based functional tasks are demonstrated. Progression ideas and monitoring are demonstrated and discussed.
Part III: (1 hour 15 min) Review the patient interaction video while listening to commentary by Keith Screen, master clinician, with comments and questions from Dr. Carole Lewis and Rebecca Fielding. Learn what valid tools can be used to objectively measure your patient’s impairments and set measureable goals.
Part IV: (1 hour 15 min) Keith reveals his clinical decision making process as he moves through the treatment segment, all the while focusing on his patient’s impairments and the patient’s personal goals. Explore what and why specific treatments are chosen and progressed.

Description

Geriatric Occupational Therapy is often complex and challenging, especially when your patient can’t provide all the details. Watch as Keith Screen, MS, OTR, CLT evaluates and treats a medically complex geriatric patient he has never met before. He uses client-focused, occupation-based assessments to help his patient establish her personal plan of care. Keith demonstrates objective tests and measures for upper extremity, trunk, and lower extremity impairments in a patient with hemiparesis hip fracture and multiple medical problems. You will also see the evidence based tools used to assess functional deficits. This will be followed by patient education regarding her impairments, how they relate to her functional goals, and the process of goal setting based on the patient’s needs, roles and desires. Following the initial evaluation, Keith demonstrates creative, evidence based, functional interventions. Progression and monitoring are demonstrated.
