Objectives

Following successful completion of the course, the participant will:
1. Recognize the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular system
2. Know the pathophysiology, characteristics, & presentation of BPPV
3. Understand the prevalence & incidence of BPPV
4. Understand how to perform a comprehensive examination for the identification of BPPV
5. Interpret examination findings to determine the presence of posterior canal (PC) BPPV
6. perform standard treatment techniques and manage posterior canal (PC) BPPV
7. identify anterior canal (AC) and horizontal canal (HC) BPPV for the purpose of appropriate referral

APPROXIMATELY 4 HOURS are needed to complete all units and testing. Continuing education approval has been obtained for physical therapists in Florida (#110017007), Texas (4.0 CCUs #50907A), California (0.40 CEUs CPTA#11-154).
Participants are encouraged to check requirements with the local state licensing agency to assure that proper credit is received.

Agenda

Format: An interactive video-based learning experience enables participants to follow a lecture sequence, review portions that are complex or novel to the learner, and advance at his/her own pace. This on-line course is organized in 3 sections, as listed above, presented in Flash formal. Within the units, participants can choose to go back and review, move forward or to take the series numerous times before taking the post test. The learner must achieve a minimum score of 70% on the post test, which is based on material from all units, to get the certificate of completion. Materials will be available for participants to review repeatedly for a 3 month period. Once the participant achieves a minimum of 70% success on the test, and completes the course evaluation form, a certificate of successful completion is provided.

Description

This BASIC LEVEL course provides an overview of evidence based practice addressing dizziness, and specifically the identification of BPPV in these patents. Material is organized in four sections: 1) Introduction, to include Anatomy and Physiology of the Vestibular System and incidence of BPPV, 2) Evaluation and treatment for BPPV of the posterior semicircular canal, 3) Other forms of BPPV, and 4) Factors for success. Additional resources for vestibular rehabilitation materials, to include references within juried, peer reviewed journals, are provided.
