Discipline(s):   Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy
Contact Hours:   15
Registration Fee:   $504.00

Objectives
After completing this course, the participant will: *define the basic settings for the use of electric stimulation as they are applied in Functional Stimulation and in TENS. *be familiar with the multiple uses of Functional Electrical Stimulation, including muscle strengthening and re-education; possibilities in gait training, spasticity reduction and pain control, and facial paralysis with emphasis on the pediatric population *discuss basic principles of electrode size and materials, and demonstrate appropriate placement technique. *compare basic similarities, differences and functional applications of TENS and FES (NMES* PES.) *know the guidelines and contraindications in working with electric stimulation in the pediatric population. *be able to cite the current literature as it pertains to the use of electric stimulation modalities for functional rehabilitation in the pediatric population *be able to use and make appropriate choices of electric stimulation parameters with the pediatric population for different diagnoses. *know the guidelines, parameters, and contraindications for the use of iontophoresis in the pediatric population

Target Audience
PT, OT and assistants

Description
Learn to appropriately select parameters for using TENS and FES to enhance treatment protocols specifically for the pediatric population. Specialty applications, which reference the differences between Neurologic and Orthopedic diagnoses will be reviewed. Specific protocols for shoulder subluxation, rhomboid stabilization, brachial plexus injuries, and facial paralysis will be reviewed and practiced in lab. Review of TENS and FES, including parameter selection for chronic pain, muscle strengthening, and neuromuscular rehabilitation will be discussed. Recent research will be reviewed for electrical modalities, with contraindications specifically referring to Pediatrics. Prior exposure and/or knowledge of modalities & anatomy is helpful to maximize learning experience. The educational information is presented in combination with intensive hands-on lab format. The presentation style is relaxed, with the instructor willing to answer questions throughout the class. Labs are set up to allow equipment for each set of therapist partners, insuring that participants are comfortable with both the theoretical constructs, the physical set up of the equipment, and the actual outcome expected when working with pediatric patients.
Please note: Live courses require a minimum number of participants to operate. You will receive a written confirmation from Rehab Education when minimum is met. Do not purchase non-refundable travel until you receive official written confirmation.
