Objectives

Identify and communicate adverse drug reactions and side effects to health care team in order to improve patient safety. Incorporate the 2019 American Geriatric Society Potentially Inappropriate Medication Resource (aka “Beers List” into clinical practice.

Description
Medication errors including inappropriate med prescription and administration are the third leading cause of death in the United States. There are tools available such as the Beers Criteria that assist the treating clinician to identify medications that are potentially inappropriate for the older adult. The purpose of this course is to equip clinicians with medication knowledge and tools to assess for intended and adverse effects of medication. The participant will be able to perform a medication reconciliation to ensure drug safety regarding proper drug dosing (dose and timing), indications, contraindications, drug-drug interactions, and how physical and mental functions may be impacted by the medications our patients are taking.
