Description
Rehabilitation of patients following knee surgery to restore / repair cartilage can be challenging even for the most experience clinicians. The rehabilitation program requires a meticulous approach to create an optimal healing environment for the healing articular cartilage. It is imperative for the rehabilitation specialist to achieve optimal outcomes while minimizing overstressing the surgical repair. This course reviews the most updated surgical approaches, evidence-based guidelines, and specific protocols for the different surgical procedures. Although the emphasis is on taking a clinical practice guideline approach, based upon clinical reasoning, contemporary protocols are provided as a useful reference. Recent advancements in surgery will be shown and the various factors that may influence the post-operative outcome and /or necessitate modification to treatment approach will be reviewed. Video demonstration of exercise and manual interventions are utilized to reinforce correct techniques. Phase-based rehabilitation guidelines are presented, including transitioning the patient to sport- specific training programs. Effective management strategies for common clinical pitfalls will be explored, with case examples to reinforce learning. Return to sport progression is thoroughly discussed, including evidence-based return to play criteria and self-management strategies
