Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the NDT theoretical principles and terminology in the clinical practice of speech-language pathology.
2. Identify general neuro-muscular impairments and their relationship to oral motor impairments.
3. Differentiate etiology of phonation and phoneme production errors.
4. Describe speech sound production errors in relation to movement synergies and neuro-muscular control.
5. Discuss the importance of postural stability and alignment in the whole body for efficient voicing/phonation and phoneme production.
6. Use NDT principles/treatment strategies to develop treatment plan for 2 case studies

Description
This course is a two day course with a specific focus on the speech production, including phonation, of children with mild to moderate neuromuscular disorders. This course is intended to be an introduction of the NDT theoretical principles and strategies for pediatric speech –language pathologists and SLPAs. Throughout this course, participants will learn to recognize general neuro-muscular deficits and analyze how these deficits relate to oral motor deficits and speech production errors. Facilitation lab will be utilized to enhance learning, as well as introduce treatment strategies. Analysis of case studies will also be completed for the purpose of differential diagnosis and direct application of course material.
