#133 Blood Flow
Restriction Training
Motivations, Inc.
Format(s): Live Seminars
Discipline(s): Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy / Athletic Training
Contact Hours: 7
Registration Fee: $225
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
1. Discuss current evidence underpinning the use of blood flow restriction (BFR) training in management of postoperative,
geriatric, cardiac, and healthy populations.
2. Describe indications, precautions, and contraindications (relative and absolute) of BFR in the rehabilitation setting for
musculoskeletal conditions and effectively determine populations who may benefit from BFR training
3. Develop the psychomotor skills necessary to utilize BFR training safely and competently in clinical practice for the
diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions.
4. Facilitate sound clinical reasoning processes behind the selection of BFR training, protocol selection, and occlusion
pressures and evidence base with use of BFR as a low-load high-repetition training option to minimize inflammation,
decrease risk of injury, and encourage hypertrophy, strength, and healing.
5. Understand the most recent evidence supporting the mechanical, physiological, chemical, and hormonal effects of BFR
training.
6. Provide best practice physical therapy by combining symptoms, examination findings, and current best evidence for
musculoskeletal conditions to utilize BFR training as a part of a multimodal approach to treatment and recovery.
7. Understand the laws and regulations associated with BFR training and how these regulations play a role in utilization of
these techniques in a clinical setting.
8. Provide education regarding the future implications of BFR training and the practitioner role in furthering the utilization
of this safe and effective method of strength training.

Description
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training has been shown to result in hypertrophy, strength gains, and
functional improvements while utilizing low-load high repetitions to encourage safety, minimize over-training, and minimize
inflammation of affected areas. This occurs by allowing arterial flow to the desired muscle while restricting venous return,
selectively manipulating the physiology of the muscle during the training session. This is extremely beneficial for patients
who are in their peak training cycle, injured, or recovering from surgery. It is also beneficial for older adults who are
attempting to improve strength, endurance, and independence while minimizing the risk associated with high-load
interventions. (Introductory level)
