Objectives
Course Goals:This course is intended to instruct the professional on evaluation and treatment of the adolescent overhead athlete. Professional Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to: Identify and provide the time frames for the four phases of cartilage healing follow cartilage repair surgery Recognize the evidence-based expected time frame for return to sports following knee microfracture Identify four risk factors for sustaining a quadriceps tendon rupture Cite two common mechanisms of injury for a rupture of the quadriceps tendon Identify the five rehabilitation phases and identify one goal, the weightbearing status, and knee range of motion target goal for each phase Criteria for Completion:A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.

Description
The evidence regarding the appropriate rehabilitation program following special surgeries involving the knee is sparse. Quadriceps tendon rupture is a relatively uncommon injury with a reported incidence of 1.37/100,000 patients per year. Microfracture is the most commonly performed cartilage restoration/repair technique involving the knee in professional football players. The aim of this course is to present the best available evidence for the proper rehabilitation of patients who have undergone special surgeries to the knee, with a focus on microfracture and primary repair of the quadriceps tendon. This evidence is presented against the background of extensive clinical experience working with patients who have undergone special surgeries of the knee, specifically microfracture and quadriceps tendon repair. Gaps in current physical therapy and athletic training educational programs include lack of information on important factors that impact the rehabilitation program, including the presence of co-morbidities concomitant injuries, tissue quality and surgical technique. This course addresses those issues, as well as recommend science-based guidelines for exercise progression. The use of videos will capture and reinforce learning the importance of proper execution of therapeutic exercises in order minimize excessive stress to the healing structures and/or re-injury. Case studies are discussed relating to clinical pitfalls, complications and the importance of individualizing intervention strategies based on patient response and progress. This course is intended to instruct the professional on proper rehabilitation of patients who have undergone special surgeries to the knee, with a focus on microfracture and primary repair of the quadriceps tendon. This Seminar-on-Demand is 1 contact hour in length (check your state's approval status in the state specific course catalog for your profession).
