Objectives

Course Goals:This course is intended to instruct the professional on the fundamentals of emergency response. Professional Objectives:At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to: Identify a respiratory emergency in patients, and provide the proper interventions. Identify breathing devices and when to use them to maintain airways. Recognize the signs and symptoms of a possible heart attack, and describe how to care for someone who is experiencing persistent chest pain and/or other signs and symptoms of heart attack. Recognize the signs and symptoms of a possible stroke, and describe how to care for someone who is experiencing stroke like symptoms. Recognize life threatening uncontrolled bleeding and demonstrate how to control it. Recognize a trauma related event and the appropriate first aid intervention. Criteria for Completion:A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.

Description

The purpose of the Emergency Response for the 21st Century course is to provide healthcare professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to work as a first responder in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain, and minimize the consequences of an injury or sudden illness until more advanced medical help can arrive. The course details common trauma and emergency situations and proper interventions for each. Healthcare professionals leave this course armed to effectively respond to breathing emergencies, heart attacks, strokes and accidents.
