#7227 Respiratory Muscle Strength Training for Airway Protection and Respiration

Motivations, Inc.

Format(s):   Home-study
Discipline(s):   Occupational Therapy / Speech-Language
Contact Hours:   3
Registration Fee:   $60

Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:• WHO: Attendees will identify measureable therapeutic targets for airway protection and respiration which are achievable via RMST. • WHAT: Attendees will be able to discuss RMST in terms of o the basic principles that underlie inspiratory and expiratory muscle strength training and identify the approach most likely to achieve patient- and diagnosis-specific treatment goals. o the basic principles of operational variants of RMST: resistive and pressure threshold training and apply this knowledge to develop targeted and functional treatment goals. • WHY: Attendees will be able to identify and discuss o the neuromuscular anatomy and physiology of respiration o how airway protective functions of cough and swallow function within the context of a shared substrates model of airway protection o how RMST applies basic principles of exercise physiology to strengthen muscles of airway protection and respiration. • WHEN & HOW: Attendees will be able to select a functional and goal-driven approach to inspiratory and/or expiratory muscle strength training, determine the type of device and manner of therapeutic approach most likely to achieve functional improvement in airway protection and/or respiration, implement targeted training, and measure treatment-related changes in their patients.

Target Audience
Speech language pathologists, Respiratory therapists, Nursing, Occupational therapists and Assistants

Description
Respiratory muscle strength training or RMST is a device-driven therapy that targets muscles essential for ventilation as well as the airway protective functions of cough and swallow. This course will review empirically-driven approaches for both inspiratory (IMST) and expiratory muscle strength training (EMST) in a wide range of patient groups. Therapy approaches for RMST and commercially-available RMST devices (both resistive and pressure threshold) and protocols will be discussed in detail. (Intermediate)
