# 112 Biomechanical Considerations in Rehabilitation for Lower Extremity Injuries With A Focus On Running

Motivations, Inc.

Format(s):   Live Seminars
Discipline(s):   Physical Therapy / Occupational Therapy / Athletic Training
Contact Hours:   8
Registration Fee:   $225

Objectives
At the conclusion of the course the participant will be able to: 1. Identify the major principles traditionally utilized in the treatment of patients with lower extremity pathology due to running injury 2. Critically evaluate the evidence for the use of strengthening of the postural muscles as the primary form of treatment for patients with dysfunction of the lower extremity 3. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the musculature involved at the pelvis, hip, knee and ankle joints and how muscle imbalance can create pathology 4. Evaluate patients with hip, knee, ankle and foot pathology utilizing a biomechanical approach to determine an individual rehabilitation program for patients with common running injuries. 5. Create a treatment regimen to resolve muscle imbalances and utilize manual therapy and exercise as the primary form of treatment in this patient population.

Target Audience
Physical Therapists and Assistants, Occupational Therapists and Assistants, and Athletic Trainers

Description
This seminar outlines the use of the kinetic chain to diagnose and treat common pathologies affecting the lower extremities with emphasis on the knee and ankle. Novel diagnostic techniques including a biomechanical model will be discussed. Focus of evaluation will be on determining the most appropriate treatment for the individual patient. Treatments will include manual interventions and an in-depth discussion of exercise prescription with evidence for strengthening of individual muscles presented as well as discussion of common running injuries. All evaluation and treatments will have a heavy emphasis on best evidence to date.
