Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
Identify the anatomical and physiological mechanisms underlying impairments related to vestibular dysfunction in children.
Identify and select appropriate clinical tests of vestibular function, to include correct interpretation of test results.
Based on examination results, correctly identify vestibular function status (central and peripheral)
Identify diagnoses commonly known to affect vestibular function in children
Identify and select appropriate intervention for vision and balance impairments related to a specific identified vestibular dysfunction in children.
Demonstrate ability to complete differential diagnosis of vestibule-ocular and vestibulospinal function in infants, children and adolescents..
Target Audience
Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Assistants.

This is a 15-hour course equivalent to 1.5 CEUs. Motivations Inc is an approved provider by The Texas Chapter of the APTA. We follow the PT licensing Board guidelines in the states in which the course is held. Motivations, Inc. is an approved CEU provider by AOTA.
This course requires the participant to actively work with adult lab partners to practice treatment techniques. Bring a large bed sheet for floor work, ONE therapy ball medium to large, TWO toys for lab work , and ONE of these items: 2-4 bolsters and 2-4 wedges, and benches in all sizes, from about 4"-24".
Participant must wear T-shirts, leotards, or other sport-type clothing that allows a lab partner to view the trunk and limbs, as well as allowing the participant maximal movement

8:00 – 9:30 Anatomy, physiology & framework for evaluation and treatment of postural control impairments.
9:30 – 10:15 Incidence and typical pediatric diagnoses involving vestibular dysfunction
10:15 am BREAK
10:30 - 12 noon Diagnostic and clinical testing of the vestibular canal system
Noon- 12:45 LUNCH
12:45- 1:45 Practicum/lab demo: Clinical tests of the oculomotor and VOR function
1:45 – 2:45 Diagnostic and clinical testing of the vestibular otolith system
2:45 pm BREAK
3:00-4:00 Practicum: clinical testing of otolith function
4- 5:30 Case presentations and Discussion

Description
This 2 day course provides an overview of evidence based practice for vestibular related impairments in children. Didactic content includes a detailed review of the anatomy, physiology and development of the Vestibular System, the epidemiology of vestibular dysfunction in children, diagnostic and clinical testing of vestibular function, and examination and evaluation of, and intervention for, for vestibular related impairments in children. Hands-on demonstration and training of examination techniques and intervention are included. Case reviews and discussion are used to facilitate application of presented materials.
