‘Start Spreading the News’ (To New York OTs & OTAs)

The New York Office of the Professions will be phasing in the updated continuing education course requirements for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants beginning after February 13, 2013. Now, in order to complete the renewal process, occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants practicing in New York are required to complete 36 hours of occupational therapy continuing education courses from an approved continuing education agency.
The 36 hours of continuing competency must be completed within each three year period. If your renewal period falls within the months of March 2013 and February 2016, you will only be required to do one-half hour of continuing competency for each month beginning in that time period. Starting in March 2016, all registered New York OTs and OTAs will be responsible for completing the maximum 36 hours of OT continuing competency.
The options for completing this requirement will involve a combination of online home study, and occupational therapy seminars. Additionally, the board website specifies that twenty-four (24) hours of the requirement must be derived from OT continuing education courses that pertain specifically to the practice of occupational therapy. The remaining twelve (12) hours may come from CE courses that focus on administrative and non-medical aspects of occupational therapy. Please note that only 18 hours of the total 36 hour requirement may come from online occupational therapy or occupational therapy assistant continuing education courses.
