The Mississippi State Board of Physical Therapy requires physical therapists and physical therapy assistants up for license renewal to obtain a total of 24 continuing education contact hours inside the period of July 1st through June 30th annually. Please review the following breakdown of the Mississippi PT & PTA continuing education requirements, and visit the board website for more detailed explanations. Disclaimer: It is ultimately the responsibility of the practitioner to be aware of changes to their continuing education requirements. Always check your state board’s website to insure you are up to date on your requirements, as they are frequently changed.

Currently, the state of Mississippi allows PT practitioners to obtain no more than twelve (12) contact hours from online continuing education agencies. Therefore, no more than half of the requirement can be fulfilled with online credits. On top of that, at least six (6) contact hours of the total CEU credit requirement have to pertain to practicing clinical physical therapy directly. This excludes courses related to the administrative or non-clinical aspects of physical therapy. Additionally, the state requires that the practitioner must complete two (2) hours of ethics as part of the total 24 hour requirement. So let’s review:

  • Practitioners must obtain a total of 24 contact hours of CE
  • Practitioners must obtain 2 contact hours of ethics inside of the 24 hour requirement
  • At least 6 contact hours inside of the 24 hour requirement must relate directly to practicing clinical physical therapy
  • No more than 12 of the 24 contact hours of CE can come from online sources

Online physical therapy CE is appealing to many practitioners as it allows for more flexibility than attending live seminars and can be seamlessly incorporated into busy lifestyles. However, take care in selecting CEUs from online providers. Insure that their physical therapy and physical therapy assistant CEUs meet state board approval and provide you with the training tools you need for professional enhancement. In the case of Mississippi State PTs and PTAs, choose your precious twelve (12) hours of online CE wisely!
