Objectives
This course will identify the exercise related motivations, benefits and challenges unique to clients over the age of 55
At the end of this course the participant will be able to
Cite relevant statistics regarding the American Senior Population
Identify major health challenges facing older Americans
Define the most common neurological disorders among Americans over age 55
Distinguish major forms of arthritis and other orthopedic conditions
List most common forms of cardio and respiratory diseases
Recognize exercise variations to assist older clients during strength training
Identify accommodations for flexibility techniques
Recognize aerobic exercise protocols that suit common client limitations
Identify program adjustments for clients using medications
Recall human anatomy and physiology as well as responses to programmed exercise
Identify an exercise session for an older client who presents with medical issues and special needs common to the target population.
Criteria for Completion:A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.

Description
While the benefits of exercise are widely accepted, there is still a shortage of information and guidance to the special needs and considerations of older clients. This course will identify the exercise related motivations, benefits and challenges unique to clients over the age of 55. Student will learn of some of the most common health issues faced by Senior clients, and the important adjustments to exercise needed to accommodate the target population. The class includes changes in human physiology, psychology and social position related to aging. Also featured is a synopsis of some of the most prevalent medications among older Americans and how these medications affect exercise planning. Specific exercise techniques are recommended which have been shown to be safe and effective for clients over age 55.

Course Outline:
Hour 1
Display figures from census and other government sources
List health issues by category: skeletal, neurological, cardiac, muscular
Discuss stroke, neuralgia, Parkinson's Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Dimentia
Discuss osteoarthritis, rheumatoid and gouty arthritis
Define heart attack, arteriosclerosis, and stroke
Illustrate alterations in starting position
Hour 2
Describe accommodating equipment
Present alternate start positions
Discuss limits in motion and range
List additional methods of measuring intensity
Suggest extra safety precautions
Discuss medication effect on heart rate response
List precautions for diabetic client
Hour 3
Discuss basic anatomy of skeletal, muscular and nervous systems
Present mechanisms of circulation and respiration
Discuss fundamental exercise programming principles
Present cautions and accommodations for older clients
Account for effects and side effects of medications
