Objectives

• Examine comprehensive, interactive strategies for improving ADL/IADL activities for individuals with limited range of motion, diminished strength, incoordination, neurological deficits, and low vision

• Examine current assistive technology devices (including smartphone/tablet apps) and how they enhance functional performance

• Define Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), and "Level of Independence" according to both therapy and nursing terminology

• Differentiate and critique various standardized tests related to ADLs/IADLs

• Outline strategies for functional documentation that will reduce denials

• Specify intervention strategies to reduce falls and enhance home safety, especially for the geriatric clientele

• Discuss the use of technology to adapt to decline in cognitive functions

• Identify key federal tags that relate to and help surveyors assess compliance with ADL status regulations in skilled nursing facilities

• Discuss how to adapt common ADL/IADL interventions for a variety of functional limitations and unique situations?

Description

<p><b>Practical, Innovative Strategies for Restoring Independence</b><br> ADLs and IADLs&mdash;for those individuals who have suffered a serious injury or illness, return to these once-simple activities might raise numerous obstacles. Clients will undoubtedly want to transition back into their daily activities as soon as possible, but unfortunately for many, there will be a sharp inability to function as they once did. Our job as clinicians is to help restore a client's functional independence, working to integrate the whole health team into the development of a comprehensive treatment plan. Relating the client diagnosis to the affected ADLs not only helps the health care team understand the treatment plan better, it justifies the need for multidisciplinary intervention.<br> <br> This one-day seminar will provide clinicians with ample case study examples of how to weave ADLs and IADLs into a client's therapeutic interventions with respect to diagnosis. From activity analysis to home management strategies, participants will examine and discuss all the puzzle pieces that go into building a comprehensive and tailored treatment plan. Specific interventions for adult and geriatric populations will be outlined and current assistive technologies (e.g. smartphone/tablet apps), and how they enhance functional performance, will be examined. In addition, the speaker will address federal tags (F-tags) as they relate to ADLs and will outline easy-to-implement strategies to improve survey compliance in skilled nursing facilities. Attendees will return to practice with practical, effective ways to incorporate ADLs and IADLs into therapeutic treatment plans and with the tools to document each case effectively.</p>
