Objectives

Following successful completion of the course, the participant will:
1. Discuss typical development of static and dynamic balance in terms of individual sensory systems and the interaction of sensory and motor systems.
2. Select appropriate assessment tools based on reported activity limitations and participation restrictions, given a specific case scenario.
3. Identify appropriate intervention strategies for specific impairments
4. Select appropriate interventions to address impairments (based on specific case scenario examination results) and discuss rationale behind the chosen interventions.

APPROXIMATELY 6.5 HOURS are needed to complete all units and testing. Continuing education for physical therapists has been obtained in Florida (110017008), Texas (50906A), California (0.65CEUs;CPTA#11-153).
Participants are encouraged to check requirements with the local state licensing agency to assure that proper credit is received.

Agenda

FORMAT:
An interactive video-based learning experience enables participants to follow a lecture sequence, review portions that are complex or novel to the learner, and advance at his/her own pace. This on-line course is presented in Flash format. Within the units, participants can choose to go back and review, move forward or to take the series numberous times before taking the post test. The learner must achieve a minimum score of 70% on the post test, which is based on material from all units, to get the certificate of completion. Materials will be available for participants to review repeatedly for a 3 month period. Once the participant achieves at least a 70% on the test, and completes the course evaluation form, a certificate of successful completion will be provided.

Description

This BASIC LEVEL course provides an overview of evidence based practice addressing balance impairments in children. Balance ability is a prerequisite of motor development and impacts functional abilities. The purpose of this course is to present current evidence on evaluation and treatment of balance impairments in children using a systems approach.

The course includes 3 units:
1) review of systems approach and the systems involved in postural control and balance,
2) examination and evaluation of balance and
3) intervention targeted on system impairments.

Material is presented in an interactive, dynamic format that enables the learner to progress, self-paced through the material.
