Objectives
At the completion of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the importance of a multi-professional approach with complex patients in the ICU and identify early predictors and indicators to assist the medical team in determining a patient’s projected course. 2. Perform treatments for the critically ill beyond mobility and exercise prescription and create a plan for timing of treatment to illicit maximal function with patients who are medically complex using outcome measures and an evidence based approach. 3. Justify their own “gut instincts” regarding projecting a patient course and how to assist the multi-professional team in higher level clinical decision making. 4. Interpret fracture patterns, management, and treatment while identifying the impact to the therapy picture and plan for patients involved in a trauma. 5. Assess, perform treatment and manage cases for patients with Traumatic Brain Injury in the ICU setting.

This course is designed for Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapists, and Occupational Therapy Assistants interested in advancing practice in the Critical Care Patient Populations.

Description
This course will go beyond the basic knowledge of evaluation and treatment of patients in the Critical Care Environment. It will focus on expanding the role of the therapist in the ICU setting and establish a knowledge base and treatment approach beyond mobility and exercise. The Critically Ill Trauma patient population will be of specific focus in this course with a deep dive into the orthopedic-trauma and traumatic brain injury patient populations. Current research and case examples will be utilized throughout. This course is also applicable to a large patient population of those who are or have been critically ill in their course.
