Course Goals:This course is intended to instruct the professional on knee protection. Professional Objectives:At the conclusion of this course, the participant will be able to: Identify bony characteristics key to articulation Describe muscles affecting the knee joint as well as active and passive stabilization structure Discuss the interrelation of the ACL with other structures Recite statistics of knee injuries between men, women and among age groups Name primary risk factors which increase exposure knee injury. Describe impact of knee injuries on future outcomes including further injury, arthritis, premature retirement Name three surgical procedures common in the treatment of knees Recall advantages and possible disadvantages of each approach Compare training protocols which emphasize strength, endurance, or balance Discuss various outcomes observed in cited literature Distinguish Open Chain from Closed Chain exercises Name several modalities common in contemporary rehabilitation Design an exercise protocol intended to maximize knee protection Demonstrate techniques within the context of a concise exercise session Criteria for Completion:A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.

Description
This course begins with an overview of the occurrence of knee injury in the United States. Students will learn conditions which contribute to knee injury, and progress to a comprehensive view of the anatomy of this largest joint in the human body. The most common injuries and pathologies will be explored, as will some of the most popular medical interventions. The course emphasizes research and experience based techniques shown to be effective at preventing knee damage and facilitating return to activity following injury. Exercises will be revealed in isolated views and organized into a coherent protocol for immediate application.
