Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the professional on Cardiovascular pathologies establishing a foundational paradigm of the workings of the human heart. Professional Objectives: Define the role of veins, arteries and capillaries Distinguish the function of the Atria from the Ventricles Identify general and pulmonary circulation schemes Recognize the role and importance of the heart valves Define the concept of pressure and its importance in maintaining circulation Name the layers of cardiac muscle and their respective functions Identify the structures and function of the heart's electrical control mechanism Define the measures of cardiac function: Heart Rate, Stroke Volume, Cardiac Output List the long-term effects of exercise on cardiac function Compare the structures of arteries to that of veins List major symptoms associated with Cardiovascular disease (CV) Differentiate CV disease progression in women and men Distinguish the most common cardiac arrhythmias Define common congenital defects Describe the causes and effects of Congestive Heart Failure List major complications caused by chronic Hypertension Define Myocardial Infarction Criteria for Completion: A score of 70% or more is considered passing. Scores of less than 70% indicate a failure to understand the material and the test will need to be taken again until a passing score has been achieved.

Description
The Cardiovascular Pathologies course provides the student with an efficient tools to recall and understand the cardiovascular system and its many aspects. The course establishes the relationships between structure and function, how the heart works ideally, and examines the nature and origins of dysfunction. Finally, this course looks at the root causes and consequences of the most prevalent cardiovascular diseases. Upon completion the student will have gained and clearer understanding of how the human heart works and the nature and ramifications of major cardiovascular disease.
