At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Outline the proposed three theories of types of stroke hand edema and relate them to appropriate criteria for clinical treatment technique selection
2. Outline neurological and anatomical rationales for treatment selection
3. Identify current research outcomes of treatment techniques for stroke hand edema reduction and be able to implement and expand data for clinical application problem-solving
4. Identify a variety of splinting options
5. Outline positive and negative aspects of commonly used splints
6. Compare the published research for splinting and persons who have had strokes
7. Discriminate between rationales for splinting that consider current concepts of motor control, including biomechanical principles
8. Recognize the impact of impairment on mobility tasks
9. Analyze specific movement patterns observed during mobility tasks and common compensatory strategies
10. Identify a function-based approach to retraining mobility patterns
11. Outline the impact of environmental changes on mobility tasks
12. Relate how to structure the environment to promote learning of mobility tasks
13. Understand how to use specific strategies to promote learning of mobility tasks
14. Identify fall risks

Module 1: covers pathophysiology, medical management and acute rehabilitation of stroke survivors, psychological aspects of stroke rehabilitation and improving participation and quality of live through occupation.
Module 2: covers the task-orientated approach, activity-based interventions in stroke rehabilitation and approaches to motor control dysfunction.
Module 3: covers trunk control, balance impairments and vestibular rehabilitation for stroke patients
Module 4: covers upper extremity function and management and rehabilitation
technologies to promote upper limb recovery
Module 5: covers edema control, splinting applications and functional mobility
Module 6: covers gait awareness, management of visual and visuospatial impairments and the impact of neurobehavioral deficits on ADLs.
Module 7: covers treatment of cognitive-perceptual deficits, speech and language deficits and enhancing the performance of ADLs after a stroke.
Module 8: covers parenting after stroke, driving and community mobility, dysphagia and sexual function and intimacy.
Module 9 covers seating and wheeled mobility, home evaluation and modifications, adaption to one-handed management of the environment and leisure participation after stroke.

Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the student, through self-paced study, on edema control, splinting applications and functional mobility after a stroke.
