At the end of this course the professional will be able to:
List a hierarchy of phonological awareness tasks to promote literacy development in children with speech/language difficulties.
Identify three intervention activities for word, syllable and phoneme tasks related to phonological awareness.
List two phonological awareness assessments that are readily available.
This course provides a framework for incorporating phonological awareness in the intervention of children who present with written language difficulties or poor comprehension of written text due to poor phonological awareness skills and poor literacy development. It presents an instructional hierarchy that can be used to facilitate this process, which includes word, syllable and phoneme awareness, rhyme, alliteration, as well as syllable and phoneme identification, blending, segmenting and manipulation. In addition, multiple therapy ideas and activities for each of the phonological awareness target areas are shared as well as a comprehensive list of phonological awareness assessments.
