Objectives

Description
Learn evaluation and treatment strategies for persons with stroke from the acute to chronic setting. Evaluation tools will include a review of standardized outcomes. Foundations of neurological treatment will be presented including neuroplasticity, task specific training and cardiorespiratory training. Evidence will be reviewed for treatments with an emphasis on translation and implementation to real life settings. Protocols including amount of therapy (e.g. frequency, intensity and duration) and client selection will be provided. Interventions will include: constraint induced therapy, bilateral upper extremity training, strengthening, circuit training, locomotor training and mental practice. Different types of electrical stimulation will be reviewed including sensory, cyclic, functional electrical stimulation and foot drop stimulation. Evidence for treatment of hemiplegic shoulder and spasticity will be presented. New technologies will be reviewed including virtual reality, robotics and brain stimulation.
