Course Goals: This course is intended to instruct the professional through a self-paced study on the postsurgical rehabilitation of the spine.
At the end of this course the professional will be able to:
*Differentiate between contained and sequestered disc herniations.
*Identify surgical techniques used in performing a lumbar microdiscectomy.
*List criteria for surgery for a lumbar miscrodiscetomy.
*List goals, precautions, and treatment strategies in the postoperative phases I, II, III and IV for a lumbar microdiscetomy.
*Identify criteria for returning to sports following a lumbar microdisectomy.
*Identify sports-specific considerations used to help patients return to sports.
*Distinguish between primary and secondary osteoporosis.
*Identify risk factors associated with osteoporosis.
*Identify the five-point program and differentiate between goals, precautions and treatment strategies for posture and body mechanics, flexibility, strengthening, weight-bearing and balance.
*Identify rehabilitation considerations following a vertebral kyphoplasty.
*Identify precautions to consider for a spinal fusion.
*List 7 indications for a spinal fusion.
*Identify the four-stage procedure used for a PLIF.
*List goals, precautions, treatment strategies including transfer training and progression of HEP in the postoperative phases I, II, III, and IV and V for a spinal fusion.
*List criteria for advancement in the postoperative phases I, II, III and IV for a spinal fusion.
*Identify a five week interval return to golf program.
