  • Identify the specific signs and symptoms associated with each of the three progressive neurological diseases
  • Develop an understanding of how to stage the disease and develop appropriate interventions
  • Demonstrate how to implement effective interventions in all therapeutic settings
  • Integrate current research information into clinical practice patterns

Description
Over the last 20 years, more and more Americans have been diagnosed with various progressive neurological disorders. This is due to improved diagnostic testing and most recently, the human genome project. The human genome project has aided the medical community in determining who in our population is at greater risk for developing a progressive neurological disease. As more people are diagnosed with progressive neurological diseases, therapists are finding themselves at a loss when determining how to provide effective therapy services to this population.
In this one-day seminar, participants will discuss the etiology of three specific progressive neurological diseases (Parkinson's Disease, Huntington's Disease and Multiple Sclerosis), how the disease progresses and effective goals and therapeutic interventions at the various stages of each of the diseases. At the crux of this seminar is the fact that the purpose of therapeutic interventions is never to stop the progression but to promote functional independence throughout the progression of the disease.
Individuals attending this seminar will be exposed to the pathophysiology and signs and symptoms, in order to develop effective treatment interventions. Ultimately, it is imperative for clinicians to be able to create effective individualized clinical interventions, which will address the specific needs associated with the stage of the disease process, as well as the needs of the location where the individual resides.
